Watch out for fake downloads of Instagram for Android

With all the hype surrounding Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram for around $1 billion, Instagram has become amongst the top most downloaded app on Android and iPhones. However, cyber-criminals are at it already! Users of Android phones should be wary of fake downloads that appear to be Instagram for Android but are in fact malware.

Sophos, who first discovered the malware, identify it as “Andr/Boxer-F.”. The malware apps are sending expensive international text messages and picture messages, which generate revenue for its cyber-criminals.

As a precaution, only download Instagram from the official Google Play store to avoid infecting your smartphone with malware. The official link is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.instagram.android.
